Galatians 1 LAB Notes

Paul's Background Is a Mercy to Us/ Galatians 1:1-2/ Pt 1.

  • Paul's own introduction in Acts 22:3, Galatians 1:13-14.
  • Acts 13:9 is a turning point in Saul's/Paul's name. Paul is his gentile name to reflect his focus on the gospel to the Gentiles. From henceforth he is referred to as Paul.
  • Look at pre-saved Paul and love the mercy of God towards sinners.

How Do We Know Paul's Words are God's Words?/ Pt 2.

  • Paul saw the risen Christ and was a leader of it.
  • The word is self-authenticating for it is the highest authority/word there is.
Authorized by God, the Father, and Son /Pt 3.
  • The Gospel and its authority come from Christ.
  • Paul was confirmed by men Acts 13, but it still came from God.
  • God raised His own son. The Son has always been the Son; and likewise with the Father.
Unusual First Words for Paul/ Pt 4.
  • No thanksgiving, "saints" and no other letter is "from all the brothers".
  • "church" is the people; not the building.

The Glory of Grace and Peace/ Galatians 1:3-5/ Pt 1.
  • Grace is flowing/coming to you in this letter. Grace is power in motion from God to us.
  • Grace is God's attitude to treat us better than we deserve; He saves us in spite of our sin.
  • Grace: undeserved, unmerited favor/blessing.

He Gave Himself for Our Sins/ Pt 2.
  • Paul preached that Christ died on the cross publically on behalf of us for our sins against Him as an act of love/grace to us.
Delivered From the Present Evil Age/ Pt 3.
  • Present age: darkness, that stops the glory of the gospel being seen by sinners.
  • Future age: second coming, eternal light.
  • We have been set free from wrath, control of sin, blindness, and guilt.

How Ultimate is the Glory of God?/ Pt 4.
  • 1:3-5 is the sum of Galatians. Thus the "amen".
  • Grace - Christ's sacrifice - deliverance - God's glory.
  • The plan of salvation is by the Father through the Son for His own glory.
  • His mercy is for His glory Romans 15:9.

How to Lose the Grace of God/ Galatians 1:6-9/ Pt 1.
  • Gospel: the grace of God in the death of Christ, His Son.
  • The "new gospel" is works-righteousness; not graciousness. Thus, nullifying the work of Christ.
Authority Above Angels and Popes /Pt 2.
  • "we preached... you received" the Gospel is objective not subjective to its messenger.
  • Christ is above angels, apostles, and popes.
  • His word is above all human authority.
A Man Who Refused to Please Man/ Galatians 1:10
  • Paul sought God's approval; not man's.
  • Christ is our Master; not man.
  • Do not seek to make enemies.
  • Do not bend, or break the Gospel to please man.
This Gospel Did Not Come From Man/ Galatians 1:11-17/ Pt 1.
  • No one can bring another Gospel because all other "gospels" are man's gospels.
  • It is from man in origin and purpose.
  • The Gospel is from God, to His apostles for the purpose of our salvation without works.
Paul's Argument for His Authority /Pt 2.
  • Paul persecuted the Church, he tried to destroy the Church and he was zealous in Judaism.
  • He was a follower of the letter, the tradition of the law not the spirit.
  • His true repentance can only be explained by a true revelation of Christ.

The Sovereign Roots of Paul's Apostleship/ Pt 3.
  • Set apart, called by grace, revealed Son... so that I might preach...
  • Grace in eternity 2 Tim. 1:9.
  • Saved by grace in the plan of grace in eternity past for the glory of grace in eternity future.

Helpful Resources

Here is a list of great resources that I know and love and commonly use in preparation for biblical studies. I highly recommend that you buy or bookmark them and pray that they are as much of a blessing to you as they have been for me. Bibles: *Please note: If you dig around on the web you are likely to find other versions of the same Bibles that I am recommending here for much cheaper. I personally recommend Amazon for good prices and timely delivery. 1) The Reformation Study Bible by R.C. Sproul. Sproul has been one of my more recent mentors and has had a huge impact on my life and theological studies. And I have loved every page in this bible. https://reformationstudybible.com/ 2) The Spurgeon Study Bible. If you love Scripture and Spurgeon then you'll definitely enjoy this bible. Simply a fantastic Bible. I do recommend the Christian Standard Bible Translation because I believe it is second only to the ESV translation and I also find it very easy to read. http://csbspurgeo

On the Church & the State

Theology is no easy philosophy, it raises many different questions like how does the Christian live in a secular world, do they run for office, if so when? Likewise, the political realm has had its challenges with religion as well for example: what and how much should the gov tolerant rel? All the questions and more are very important and valid to answer. All of these questions answers could differ depending on one's view of God. This is why the study of God, theology is so important. Martin Luther in his work Temporal Authority: To What Extent It Should Be Obeyed wrestles with the question of the “temporal authority and the sword it bears, [and] how to use it in a Christian manner, and to what extent men are obligated to obey it.” ( Temporal Authority 1). Luther is writing this so that the Christian if he becomes the holder of an office will be able to rule and rule well by knowing how the temporal sword is to be used. One of the first points that Luther makes it established
