Theology in Hymns: Useful or Not?

- Hymns help to teach the tenets of the faith and remember them.
- Words of sound doctrine mixed them with a memorable tune to result in lessons that can be easily learned/remembered. 
- Theology: Study of God
- Theology is the foundation of all your thinking; it sets the inclinations of the heart/mind.

Questions to consider:
  1. What theology is expressed in the congregational's singing?
  2. Is there sufficient pastoral breadth in music? 
  3. Is there sufficient liturgical breadth?
  4. Is there sufficient historical, cultural breadth?
  5. Does the music serve the text?
  6. Does the music encourage corporate worship?
  7. Is the music appropriate to the capability of the congregation?
  8. Do the hymns we sing encourage growth in discipleship?

On the Christian & His Relation to the Law

Christians have long since wrestled with the significance of the Old Law, of the Jews, and the New Law and, moreover, how to these Laws apply to the political realm, if at all. St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, and John Locke are but a few who have tried to answer these questions. Each one argues that the Old Law is no longer needed to be obeyed by the Christian because the Christian has a new, surpassing Law, that is the New Law. The New Law being the Law given by Christ Himself which is, in short, loving God and loving neighbor.  What Was Worth So Much Struggle?/ Colossians 2:1-3/ Pt 1.  The reward of Paul's struggle in 2:2 is full assurance in Christ.  He fought against false teaching and wanted them to rest fully in Christ.  Love, Unity, and Assurance in the Truth/ Pt 2. Hearts made strong, hopeful, and able to stand against threats of assurance. Paul hopes his struggle is encouraging to them.  Paul's struggle for them is a showing of Christ's work through him.  Love is the glue of relationships.  Love grows us in the knowledge of God as well.
