How to Read the Bible Devotionally Pt.Ⅱ

Now that we have sufficiently covered the Minimalist Method in part one let us now consider how to best maximize our time spent in God's word. For our purposes here we focus on Study Bibles and Journaling.       First, consider the Study Bible: As the name suggests it is a Bible with various notes to help the reader understand what it is they are reading. The Study Bible will generally include an introductory page on each book of the Bible that explains who wrote that particular book, when they wrote it, why they wrote it, and to whom they wrote. On the proceeding pages, there will be verse notes on concepts, doctrine, words, or actions found in that chapter.       In my time since I've become a Christian, there has been quite the explosion of Study Bibles; and they don't seem to be going anywhere any day soon. When considering which Study Bible to purchase it is important to remember that our goal of reading devotionally is to...

RANSOM: How To Have Better Devotions

For March I wanted to do a series of various evergreen topics of the faith. Today we will be beginning this series with one of the most evergreen topics possible; that being our devotions. Today we will look at the RANSOM Bible study method. As well as a brief Church history lesson. But before that, we need to establish what it is that we're studying and why we study it. First, what are we studying? The Bible. In your own words, what is the Bible? The Bible is from God (literally God-breathed) to show and tell us the character, nature, requirements, and the actions of God and the proper response of man to that showing and telling of God. (For a fuller understanding of the Bible and how it came to be please watch the Bible Project's video on the matter). Let's see how the Bible defines itself. Turn to 2 Timothy 3:16-4:3 . Based on these verses, how does the Bible define itself? Paul says that all Scripture, both Old and New Testament, is breathed out by God. It is from...

Verses on Rejection

1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Proverbs 18:24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Psalm 94:14 For the Lord will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. Isaiah 41:17 The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the Lord will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. Isaiah 53:3-4 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. 4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, sticker by him, and afflicted. Deuteronomy 4:31 The Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon o...
